Strawberry Farmer’s Son: Story 19

10 Unnecessary Fears

I picked up some irrational fears as a child that turned out to be not nearly as necessary as I thought they were going to be. In the end, maybe most fears are irrational, but our imaginations are very powerful.

My Top 10 Unnecessary Fears:

10. The Bermuda Triangle. In the 1970s, this seemed like it was going to be a huge problem in my life.

9. Bigfoot. There were movies, cartoons and even documentaries about this fella. But I have not  encountered him yet.

8. A New Ice Age. My fifth grade teacher assured me that I would see a NEW Ice Age in my lifetime. I guess she missed it.

7. Massive Food Shortage. Turns out there’s plenty of food to feed all 8 billion of us and room for a few billion more people.

6. Running out of Oil. The news media said we only had about a 10 year supply left in 1975. Those suckers are still lying…

5. The Ozone Layer Depletion. My mom stopped using aerosol hairspray because of this 1970s fear. Good news is the ozone is still there and better than ever…

4. Quicksand. This geographical phenomenon made it into every jungle movie I ever watched. Not as big a problem in my life as I thought it would be.

3. Salt. When I found out that salt occurred naturally in the Earth I realized we had a limited supply. Always feared we would run out, but apparently we’re not.

2. Nuclear War. Our elementary teachers had us doing drills at school in case of nuclear fallout. I don’t think hiding under our desk would’ve solved anything anyway. Thank God Ronald Reagan won the Cold War. However, this threat is still real.

1. The Second Coming. As a teenager, I briefly considered not getting married or going to college because I thought Jesus was coming back any day. I have since learned that a believer should lead their life as normal, but be prepared in case Jesus returns.
