Strawberry Farmer’s Son: Story 26

"Fight The Good Fight"

The Apostle Paul knew full well that he would die in Rome and yet he chose to continue to fight. The courage to fight in the face of certain defeat is a defining characteristic of the church fathers. Thus it’s bred into the very DNA of His Church.

Apostle Paul was likely in prison awaiting execution when he wrote

2 Timothy. Check out these verses!

2 Timothy 4:6-8 ESV

6 “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.

7 I have fought the good fight,I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

    4 Principles from 2 Timothy 4:

1. Just when things are coming together, they fall apart again.

2. The victory is in the fight.

3. Remember the big picture.

4. There are others following you.

The inspiration of Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” books was the 1,000 year old novel, Beowulf.

JRR Tolkien on the “fight” in Beowulf:

“Beowulf is not a hero because he wins but because he fights, even when he knows the battle will bring his doom. His death is the crown of his life.”

In other words, glory isn't won only in victory — it's won by giving your all to fight the good fight.
